In alignment with Ohio law, Ohio Hi-Point Career Center is implementing a new phone-free policy beginning January 1, 2026. Our goal is to support student focus, well-being, and preparation for future success.
What’s changing? Students cannot use cell phones or personal devices during the instructional day (bell-to-bell).
Where do phones go? Phones must be silenced and stored out of sight (backpack, classroom caddy, or left at home).
What about lunch and class changes? The law prohibits the use of cell phones during class transitions and meals (breakfast and lunch).
Emergencies? Students may contact families by going to the front office; parents may call the school or email their student’s OHP email account.
Why this change? In addition to following Ohio law, research shows reduced distractions (like removing phones) helps improve focus and leads to better mental health outcomes.
When does it start? The policy begins when students return from winter break.
Many OHP staff are already incorporating phone-free practices in classrooms. This shift makes the expectation consistent across the district. By limiting distractions, students will have more time to focus on preparing for their next step - whether that’s employment, enrollment, enlistment, or entrepreneurship.
